FOUR CHAPLAINS MEMORIAL PROGRAM & LEGION OF HONOR AWARD FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS. The Four Chaplains gave their lives in World War II to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship SS Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943. The vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-233 off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.
It left Pier 12 in Stapleton, Staten Island on January 23, 1943.
